Hi Everyone!!

I got this website up and running so that I could show anyone who is interested in ordering a cake what types of cakes and cupcakes I make. But since getting this blog space up and running I've had more orders than I expected and have decided to begin a website that is a little more streamlined than this space. From the new website you will be able to find pricing information, more pictures, and also to contact me. Please follow this link for the most up to date information on my cakes and cupcakes. Thank-you.

Truro Easy Living Expo

To anyone in the Truro area, there is an Expo coming up to help showcase some of what Truro has to offer, there will be a lot of Farmer's Market vendors there and a lot of great door prizes! Yours truly will be there selling cupcakes and getting the word out about my little at home business. Hope to see you there!

My Food Network Experience

I thought I'd keep up with this blog as far as things I'm doing with my cakes and cupcakes, and if anyone is interested in placing an order they can go to my official site (link above) to see more pictures of cakes and cupcakes I've been making to sell plus pricing.
The first part of February I went to Halifax to 'compete' in Recipe to Riches, this is a show put on by the Food Network and President's Choice and they are looking for the next PC Product. There was a list of catagories, and I thought I'd go big and make a special cake I make sometimes for our family for special occasions. Now it's an expensive cake to make so I don't make it to often. Anyway we arrived at a Halifax Hotel for 9:30am which is the time I was given and the place was packed! They were not expecting a big turnout and people just kept showing up, I was there for most of the day and got to see the t.v judges and everything. Now they didn't ask me to continue to Toronto (I didn't expect them to offer :) ) But it was definately an interesting experience, I've never been on a reality tv show before, and the whole day was really fun to be involved in. I had a lot of fun and met a lot of interesting people.
Although I didn't get chosen to head to Toronto, I did get good reviews from all the judges, a lot of people came out crying and/or mad (I wasn't that invested in it, and really wasn't expecting to win this thing) but all the judges liked the cake I made and said that it would be great for a special event or gathering but that it was a little too involved to be remade into a PC Product (as it wasn't really suited for mass production, being that it contains fresh strawberries and would have to be made fresh). But I was happy with a good review from three chefs/critics.
This was the first layer of the cake (repeated three times) It's my deep dark chocolate cake recipe, the icing on the outside of the layers is my secret cream cheese icing recipe (not really a secret anymore since I had to submit the entire recipe to the food network :) ) filled with chocolate ganache and fresh strawberries. Oncve completed the cake looks like this:

So all in all it was a good day, I had a great experience that I will definately remember for a long time, one of the girls I waited with got a ticket (Go Carolyn!) and I had a lot of fun (and learned more than I wanted to know about reality television). My cake got glowing reviews, but was just a little too fancy and more than they were looking for (but I have a perfect simple recipe if I ever get the opportunity again), overall it was a worthwhile experience. Thank you Food Network!

A few of my cakes

Hopefully the little slideshow at the right side of this page will begin working soon, but I'm going to put a few pictures of other cakes I've made in this post, because as of right now the slideshow isn't up and running.

This was a cake I made for my son's second birthday. It's a huge sheet cake measuring 12x18 and the round face is 9" on it's own. It's covered with buttercream icing, and the finish is not as smooth as fondant, but it's delicious.

This cake has a layer of buttercream frosting under fondant frosting. The bow is edible as well!

This cake was covered with a buttercream icing and the decorations were also made with a buttercream. It's a delicious frosting and beautiful but not quite as 'seamless' as fondant.

This cake was covered with a vanilla buttercream, and the decorations were made with fondant icing.

This cake was made for someone who is watching calories. It's a chocolate cake, but is low fat, low cholesterol, and low in saturated fat. I also put an Italian Meringue Buttercream on it, which is one of the richest most amazing frostings I make, but it is mostly butter and egg white, so other than the butter there is nothing in it that's a 'diet killer'. It's a guilt free guilty pleasure!

The Kohler Cake

This is my latest cake. I made it for my the people my husband works with. It's a "Deep dark chocolate" cake, with buttercream and fondant icing. It was a lot of fun making the little Kohler logos, and I love making the bows for these cakes.

Hello Blogging World!

I wanted to have a blog so that if your considering hiring me to make a cake, you can see some of the work I've done. I have been baking and making cakes for a long time but have just started taking pictures of what I'm creating so that you can all know what I'm capable of. Over time, with more cake orders this page will grow, but for now please take a look at what's on the site, and keep checking back for new cakes and cupcakes!
